Lapta Alsancak Çamlıbel Mayor Fırat Ataser, speaking to Kıbrıs Gerçek about water consumption issues, highlighted the misuse of potable water, particularly in villas with swimming pools where consumption levels remain alarmingly high.
Mayor Ataser reported that in some areas, villa residents are consuming approximately 15 tons of water every two days. He warned that such levels of consumption are placing significant strain on both the municipality and local water resources. “Even though water is being supplied from Turkey, at this rate, it will still not be sufficient,” Ataser stated. He further explained that while additional water sources may be needed, many residents continue to rely on municipal water because of its lower cost.
Beginning next week, Mayor Ataser announced, new restrictions will be imposed on the use of municipal water for non-essential purposes, specifically targeting villas with swimming pools and large gardens. The use of municipal water for lawn irrigation and similar activities will be prohibited. A household water consumption limit will be introduced, and penalties will be imposed on those who exceed the established quotas or violate the new regulations.
Ataser emphasized that although numerous written warnings had previously been issued on the matter, these warnings were largely ignored. As a result, the new measures will be more stringent and strictly enforced to protect the municipality’s water resources.
