Holguín concludes Cyprus visit, to brief UNSG ahead of tripartite meeting

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguín, has competed her round of meetings in Cyprus and leaves the island on Thursday.

As she has stated, during her one-week visit to the island, she will inform the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, about her meetings ahead of his meeting with the two leaders, namely Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, in New York at the end of this month.

Holguín had separate meetings last Friday and Monday with Christodoulides, and Tatar. After the meetings, she said that she continues to work and hope for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue.

 

On Tuesday, Holguín met with the bicommunal Technical Committee on Youth, while on Wednesday, she visited the Turkish Cypriot cemetery in Tochni and the Greek Cypriot cemetery in Palekythro, where she was briefed on the progress made in the process of restoring cemeteries. She also had meetings with members of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), as well as contacts with representatives of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of both sides.

Holguin’s program also included meetings with the negotiators of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, Menelaos Menelaou and Güneş Onar, on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
