Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides has prepared two unilateral measures aimed at benefiting Turkish Cypriots, but is awaiting a positive response from Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman before announcing them, reliable sources said on Tuesday.
According to the sources, the proposed measures concern the health and economic sectors. Christodoulides is said to be seeking Erhürman’s consent in order to avoid tension and to help build a relationship of trust between the two leaders.
The same sources noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to foster cooperation ahead of renewed diplomatic engagement on the Cyprus issue.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, is expected to visit the island by the end of the month, following contacts in Geneva, Brussels and Washington. Holguin has requested a meeting with Christodoulides, which has been accepted. Christodoulides has also reportedly proposed another joint meeting with Holguin and Erhürman, though a response from the Turkish Cypriot side is still pending.
