Erhürman criticises Christodulides over Erdoğan invitation

President Tufan Erhürman has criticised Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodulides over remarks made in an interview with France’s Le Figaro, saying the approach harms the climate for a solution on the island.

Erhürman, in a statement shared on his social media account, criticised Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodulides for inviting Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to discuss the Cyprus issue, as stated in an interview published in France’s Le Figaro newspaper.

Erhürman said Christodulides’ approach does not contribute in any way to creating a climate for a solution on the island and, on the contrary, leads to a deterioration of mutual trust.

In his statement, President Erhürman said that by expressing readiness to meet President Erdoğan to discuss the Cyprus issue, Hristodulidis once again ignored his equal counterpart under the United Nations framework and the Turkish Cypriot people.

Erhürman stressed that the Turkish Cypriot people exist as one of the two equal founding partners on the island and that it is unacceptable for them to be ignored or treated as if they do not exist through statements or signed agreements.
