Erhürman “Cyprus talks not frozen”, Erhürman says

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman said the Cyprus negotiations have not stalled, stressing that technical-level work and diplomatic contacts are continuing and that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to negotiate.

In a social media post addressing recent media reports, Erhürman recalled that UN envoy María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar is expected to visit the island later this month and said the priority is to accelerate technical preparations so the visit can produce concrete outcomes that help create a solution-oriented atmosphere.

Commenting on the “looking through the hole” ritual held in the context of the Cyprus’s rotating presidency, Erhürman said he did not take the event seriously, emphasizing that after decades of unresolved issues, creating conditions for a solution requires serious and patient efforts aligned with the will of the people.

On the issue of direct flights, Erhürman underlined that the Turkish Cypriot side has not abandoned its demand, calling direct flights vital. However, he said the lack of direct flights should not be used as an excuse for all challenges facing the tourism sector, adding that more can and should be done despite existing restrictions.
