Erhürman highlights property issue after French Court extradition ruling

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman announced on Wednesday that a French court has rejected a request to extradite an individual with investments in Northern Cyprus who is sought under a European arrest warrant, citing the suspension of European law within the territory of Northern Cyprus.

In a statement shared on social media, Erhürman recalled that the property issue is one of the six core chapters of the comprehensive settlement negotiations on the Cyprus problem. He emphasized that the Immovable Property Commission serves as an effective domestic legal remedy for addressing property rights claims in line with the European Convention on Human Rights during the pre-solution phase.

“Attempting to make individuals bear the consequences of problems arising from the absence of a solution, and treating the property issue—which is an integral part of the Cyprus problem—as though it stems from the personal actions or transactions of individuals, is in no way correct,” Erhürman said.

He expressed hope that, in the coming period, approaches that undermine the already fragile environment needed for a settlement will be avoided, and that confidence-building, solution-oriented policies will instead prevail.
