The European Commission has welcomed the meeting between Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on opening new checkpoints, during the daily midday briefing in Brussels.
Maciej Berestecki, spokesperson for cohesion and reforms, said responding to a question that opening checkpoints helps in building trust, and reiterated that the EU remains ready to play an active role in supporting all stages of the process with all appropriate means at its disposal.
“We welcome today’s meeting between the two Cypriot leaders which is hosted by the UN representative in Cyprus. They are discussing about the opening of new crossing points across the Green Line”, Berestecki said.
“Crossing points allow Greek and Turkish Cypriots to meet each other and to trade. Therefore they are building trust and help pave the way to Cyprus reunification,” he noted.
“The EU remains ready to play an active role in supporting all stages of the UN led process with all appropriate means in our disposal,” he added.
