National Unity Party (UBP) Secretary General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has strongly criticised the European Parliament’s 2023–2024 Türkiye Report, accusing the European Union of once again ignoring the existence and rights of the Turkish Cypriot people.
In a written statement, Hasipoğlu described the report as another example of the EU’s biased approach, reinforcing that its Cyprus policy is limited exclusively to the Greek Cypriot administration.
“We sadly witness once again how the EU disregards the Turkish Cypriot people,” Hasipoğlu said, stressing that the EU itself deepened the Cyprus problem by admitting the Greek Cypriot side as a unilateral member.
He emphasised that the report’s insistence on a “bi-zonal, bi-communal federation” fails to reflect the current realities on the island. “Türkiye and the TRNC are not obligated to consult the EU on their growing two-state vision,” he added.
Hasipoğlu also condemned the European Parliament’s decision to hold a separate session on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to the TRNC, calling any criticism of the visit legally null and void.
“If the EU truly wishes to speak on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots, it must first fulfil the promises it made—starting with the Direct Trade Regulation,” he said.
He concluded by urging the EU to stop producing divisive and unrealistic reports and instead take concrete steps to encourage the Greek Cypriot side to engage in a fair, sustainable, and realistic settlement based on equality and mutual respect. brt
