The Maritime and Cabotage Day on July 1 will be celebrated tomorrow with ceremonies in Girne and Gazimağusa, marking its 99th anniversary.
Following the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye under the leadership of the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Cabotage Law, which came into force in 1926, declared Türkiye’s sovereignty over its seas.
Maritime and Cabotage Day commemorates this historic milestone.
The Cabotage Law ended the privileges granted to foreign ships during the capitulations period of the Ottoman Empire, granting Turkish ships the exclusive right to carry out these activities.
The ceremony in Girne for July 1 Maritime and Cabotage Day will begin at 9am in front of the Atatürk Monument.
The ceremony will start with the laying of wreaths at the monument in protocol order, followed by a moment of silence and the raising of flags accompanied by the National Anthem.
A speech on the significance of the day will be delivered, and a poem will be recited.
The ceremony in Gazimağusa will begin at 09:30am in front of the Victory Monument.
It will continue with the laying of wreaths at the monument, a moment of silence, and the raising of flags with the National Anthem.
The ceremony will conclude with a speech by Navy Lieutenant Okan Kurt from the Gazimağusa Coast Guard Group Command.
Meanwhile, as part of the July 1 Maritime and Cabotage Day, two combat elements of the Turkish Naval Forces — the TCG İmbat Fast Attack Boat (P-335) and the TCG Karadeniz Ereğli Patrol Boat (P-1214) — will be open to the public in the TRNC.
According to the Security Forces Command, on July 1 from 10am to 5pm, TCG İmbat will be available for visits at the Gazimağusa Commercial Port, and TCG Karadeniz Ereğli at the Girne Tourism Port.
