People’s Party urges realistic promises from presidential candidates

The People’s Party (HP) has called on candidates in the upcoming October presidential elections to present voters with realistic and achievable promises, warning against populist rhetoric that overstates the powers of the presidency.

In its statement, the party urged candidates to avoid populist rhetoric that creates the impression that the President, under current conditions and within the constitutional system, has the authority and power to do everything.

Noting that in the past, promises had been made ranging from solving the Cyprus problem to gaining international recognition for the TRNC, integrating with the world, and lifting isolations, the statement stressed that none of these issues were solely in the hands of the Turkish Cypriot side, but depended on international power balances and the support of Türkiye.

It added that once presidential elections were over and realities emerged, the disappointment experienced by citizens further weakened their trust in the state.

The People’s Party stressed that instead of repeating emotional and worn-out clichés that have lost their meaning, what matters was to present the Turkish Cypriot people with realistic, down-to-earth promises that also take into account today’s international relations.

The statement highlighted that the Constitution and established democratic conventions define the duties, powers, and responsibilities of the President.

“Although the President is the head of the executive, their influence and authority over the government-the other arm of the executive-and parliament are clearly defined” it added.

It was underlined that while the President’s weight and approach may increase or decrease this influence, there are limits, and all candidates should avoid rhetoric or behavior that suggests there is a presidential system in the country.
