President Tatar slams EP report on Türkiye

President Ersin Tatar criticized the 2023–2024 Türkiye Report adopted by the European Parliament, calling it another biased and politically motivated document that disregards the will of the Turkish Cypriot people.

In his written statement, President Tatar said the European Union lost its neutrality in the Cyprus issue when it violated its own principles by admitting the Greek Cypriot side as a full member in 2004, therefore, expecting impartiality from EU institutions is unrealistic, he added.

Referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Tatar emphasized that the visit represented a strong expression of the Turkish Cypriot people’s sovereignty over their land.

Labeling the visit as illegal, he said this was an unacceptable and offensive stance targeting the identity and legitimacy of the Turkish Cypriots.

Tatar stressed that the TRNC is an undeniable and concrete reality of the island and that any attempt to ignore the will of the Turkish Cypriot people is meaningless.

He described the inauguration of the new Presidential complex during Erdoğan’s visit as a historic step reinforcing the institutional and sovereign presence of the TRNC.

He also highlighted TEKNOFEST, held in the TRNC with President Erdoğan’s participation, as a proud moment for Turkish Cypriot youth and a display of Türkiye’s strength in aviation and technology.

Tatar condemned the EU institutions’ dismissive and undermining attitude toward the Turkish Cypriot side, stating that such approaches damage the “new atmosphere” for dialogue noted by the UN Secretary-General and obstruct reconciliation efforts.

As long as the EU maintains its biased position, it cannot play a role in any fair or lasting solution process.

President Tatar concluded by affirming that the Turkish Cypriot people will continue to defend their rights and pursue the recognition of their sovereign equality and equal international status—stating clearly that the European Parliament’s position holds no weight among the Turkish Cypriot public.
