Situation with monkeypox in Cyprus is manageable, Health Minister says

The situation is manageable, and all necessary measures are being taken regarding monkeypox in Cyprus, said Health Minister, Michael Damianos, on Monday.

Damianos was speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony during which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance and the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO), at the Ministry of Health, in Nicosia.

Replying to a question regarding a monkeypox case diagnosed at the Nicosia General Hospital, Damianos said that “all necessary measures are being taken so that we can manage the situation, which is clearly manageable”, adding while “there is nothing new to say”.

“We had 6 cases (of monkeypox in Cyprus). The last one was in 2022,” he said. “All necessary actions have been taken, there are protocols in place and the situation is manageable,” he stressed.

Asked about the possibility of updating the protocols, the Minister of Health noted that “the Medical Services will look into it, we will look into it as a Ministry, but it does not seem that any additional measures need to be taken at this time.”

“As I have said, there is also a sufficient supply of vaccines, so we will proceed as the protocol instructs,” he concluded.
