Snow covers mountain ranges as temperatures hit freezing point

Snow has created a crystalline landscape across Cyprus’s Troodos mountains, with a thick white blanket covering forests and weighing down tree branches amid biting cold conditions.

Met Office official Iasonas Christodoulou told philenews that frost conditions are prevailing at mountain peaks and semi-mountainous areas during night hours.

Snow depth has reached 13 centimetres at both Troodos Square and Chionistra.

“These conditions result from a weather system affecting our region, though they remain normal for winter”, Christodoulou said.

Temperatures are expected to rise by up to three degrees from Friday, exceeding seasonal averages.

The Department of Meteorology forecasts cloudy conditions with localised rain, isolated thunderstorms, and snowfall in mountainous areas.

Night temperatures are expected to drop to 3 degrees Celsius inland, around 6 degrees in coastal areas, and minus 2 degrees in higher mountain regions.

Frost is expected to form in mountainous and some semi-mountainous areas. Similar conditions, including local rainfall, isolated thunderstorms, and snowfall at higher altitudes, will persist through Wednesday.

Thursday will begin overcast before conditions improve, with temperatures remaining near seasonal averages until Thursday before a slight increase on Friday.
