
United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission, Colin Stewart, met with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in Lefkoşa today, ahead of his nal brieng to the UN Security Council scheduled for 14 July in New York.
The meeting took place at the Oce of the President and comes in the lead-up to a second informal expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue, expected to be held in New York later this month.
The upcoming 5+1 format will bring together the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders, guarantor powers, and the UN to explore prospects for renewed dialogue on the island.
Speaking after the meeting, Stewart said he was pleased with his discussions with Turkish Cypriot leader Tatar and highlighted that both Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides—whom he met last week—remain committed to the 5+1 talks.
“Both leaders want to see some tangible achievements, some progress at that meeting, so I think we are in a good situation,” he stated.
Stewart conrmed that after his Security Council brieng, he will return to the island for farewell visits before ocially retiring from the United Nations.
