UN envoy Holguín meets Tatar, highlights role of committees

United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín, met today with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and shared her impressions following their discussions.

Holguín said the meeting focused on the ongoing process and preparations for the upcoming talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in the weeks ahead.

She emphasized the importance of the committees formed under the process, noting that they were functioning effectively and playing a vital role in fostering cooperation and building connections for the future. In particular, she highlighted the youth committee, stressing its strong backing from community leaders and its positive impact. “Young people are the ones who think about and shape the future,” Holguín remarked.

The envoy outlined her plans to continue engagements in Cyprus, including meetings with the Chamber of Commerce and with negotiators both jointly and individually. She also mentioned upcoming visits to cemeteries to review their operation, underscoring her commitment to contributing meaningfully to the process.

Holguín expressed optimism about the path ahead and her anticipation of the next meeting with the Secretary-General, saying she looked forward to pursuing the dialogue with renewed hope.
