Tatar: Do not deepen mistrust-crossings must serve confidence-building not crisis

Concerns have been raised after several Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) citizens reported difficulties during their attempts to cross over to South Cyprus.

According to complaints, Greek Cypriot officials refused to recognize TRNC identity cards as sufficient and requested additional documentation.

The issue was discussed at the Presidency, and information has been requested from the United Nations.

Problems faced by citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) when attempting to cross into South Cyprus were discussed at a meeting held at the Presidency.

The issue was reviewed, and the United Nations was asked to provide clarification on the matter.

In his statement, President Ersin Tatar stressed that any new regulation or temporary measure must be communicated to the relevant parties in advance.

He warned that such uncertainties risk driving the two communities further apart and deepening mistrust.

Tatar added that crossing points should serve as channels for building confidence, not as sources of crisis.
