The European Union is responsible for the deadlock in Cyprus

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the European Union’s responsibility for the deadlock in Cyprus, emphasizing the EU’s acceptance of the Greek Cypriot Administration as a full member 20 years ago as the reason for the deadlock.

The Ministry stressed that the EU must take responsibility for this mistake and recognize the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people in order to achieve lasting peace and stability on the island and in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also criticized the EU for failing to implement its own decision to lift the embargoes and isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriots.

The statement highlighted the constructive attitude of the Turkish Cypriot side in settlement processes and the need for the EU to acknowledge the realities on the island.

In the statement, it was also reminded that as a result of the Cyprus Conference held in Crans-Montana in 2017, which was seen as the last effort by all parties concerned, the Turkish Cypriot side put forward a new vision based on the realities of today, based on the principle that a fair, realistic and sustainable reconciliation on the Island will be based on good neighbourly relations based on the cooperation between the two separate independent States.

The Foreign Ministry statement emphasized that in order to ensure a lasting peace and stability on the Island and in the Eastern Mediterranean region, it is inevitable for the European Union to take responsibility for the mistake it made twenty years ago and to register the inherent sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people by accepting the free will of the Turkish Cypriot people in the light of the current realities.
