To mark the 1st of May Labour Day a group of trade unions from both North and South Cyprus and members of the World Federation of Trade Unions, organized the “Shoulder to Shoulder for Peace and Social Justice” event at the buffer zone in Lefkoşa.
The event was also attended by the 2nd President Mehmet Ali Talat, the leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman, some MPs and the Mayor of the Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality Mehmet Harmancı.
During the event, the May Day declaration was read out in both languages by union representatives, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and the collective struggle for peace and social justice.
The declaration also called for a resolution of the Cyprus problem based on agreed terms, urging the two leaders to make use of the UN envoy and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
